El homicide occurred after the activist publicly reported networks of extortion and violence in the eastern region of the state. On August 11, 2025, during the State Coordination Table for Peace and Security Construction, she warned that her life was at risk and requested the presence of the National Guard.

In February, Mayor Valentín Lavín Romero suffered an attack in Jonacatepec.

After the murder, the state government reported that the corresponding protocols were activated to clarify the case.

Organizations such as Indigenous Women Community Leaders (MILC) and the Coordinator of Indigenous and Popular Cultural Groups (CGCIP) demanded that the homicide be investigated as femicide. The groups indicated that at least six femicides have been recorded so far this year in the eastern region of Morelos.

The Undersecretary of Government, Miguel Ángel Peláez Gerardo, stated that Sandra Rosa Camacho Flores was not a human rights defender or journalist. However, the state government recognized her as a ‘recognized social leader’ and the Secretariat of Women described her as ‘a woman committed to her community.’
